Do I need ER collets?

Thanks, all, for the info on ER collets. I know a lot more than I did and intend to get an ER chuck adapted to my spindle (1.5X8tpi) most likely using the Tools4less vendor. I would make my own but the metric threads required are an obstacle.

I think the one on tools4less is about $52.00.

I think the e bay one is a smaller diameter though. I already have a smaller back plate here, I think The smaller one might be better in my case.
On these type chucks, should you turn a recess in the back plate for the chuck to set into?

I had not seen the ER32 spindle chucks you found previously. If I had, I might not have made my own. But if you want to make your own, see this post:

If you have a threaded spindle instead of a faceplate and don't feel up to turning your own, Beal Tools sells an ER32 collet adapter that screws onto a spindle in several sizes. According to lathes.co.uk, your spindle is 1-1/2"-8 tpi but I would check first.

Yeah, 1 1/2 X 8
1 1/2"-8 Collet Chuck Only with Pair of Spanner Wrenches, $ 83.00 0r, $163.00 with 5 collets.
That is not bad, by the time you get the e bay one, and have to get a back plate,

Here is anouther option for threaded spindles

He also sales it compleat.
Also er collets are avelable in metric and SAE as well.

that one is nice too, I had seen it this weekend.
IDK if my skill level is up to making my own yet.

Do you think these ER collets and chucks would hold an end mill for light milling as well as holding the stock.
I may as well skip the end mill holder I asked about in another post, as I was looking at these ER collet chucks, if I can just hold the end mills in the collets.
I think I read that you could.
Sorry If I asked this already.
Thanks,
Tony

Yes ER collets will hold endmills verry well. I use them in all the time in production machines all the time.

I am not familiar with Beall Tools. It looks like they specialize in wood lathes. I would be a bit concerned that their ER32 collet holder may not exhibit the precision (TIR) needed for metal without more info
