DC Drive Recommendation

I recently purchased an 80's era taiwanese 10x24 lathe (Jet 10-24p). The original owner appears to have been a sharp guy and a good machinist. He also seems to have tinkered with the lathe to no end. First of all, he converted it to a DC motor. The motor in question is a Baldor 1-1/2 hp 180 volt shunt motor but the nameplate says Sabina as it appears to have been purchased with a Sabina drive as a set.

Likely because the motor is physically much larger than the factory motor and possibly for other reasons, he built a large steel cabinet for the lathe and mounted the motor down below the head in the cabinet using a well thought out set of rollers and pulleys to direct the belt down through the head. He custom built all the rollers, motor mounts, and even a tensioning system to accomodate all this.

Anyhow, needless to say, I'd rather stick to the motor configuration he has set up but I'm having some problems with the drive. It's more complex because he's actually using the drive to run a rockwell drill press he also mounted to the cabinet and converted with a 1/2hp dc motor of similar pedigree. He has a control box he used to switch between the lathe and dp (as well as forward and reverse) which also has the variable speed knob on it.

My goal is to separate out the drill press from the lathe and run each on its own drive. The old Sabina drive is a work of art but it's very large, has no enclosure to speak of, and at the moment, I can't get it to work. I could probably diagnose thr issue given enough time but I'm thinking id rather just upgrade to something more modern, self contained, and which I know works.

Does anyone have a recommendation for a dc drive for the lathe? I've purchased a KB controls drive for the DP but the only model available is only rated thru 3/4 hp and has no provisions for a FBR switch. The KBMD-240d which I think would work is backordered everywhere I've checked online.

Thanks in advance.

Do you have pictures of this setup?

if you don't mind pre-owned

Dart make some pretty good drives. i service many pieces of equipment with dart's in them

i think i have a spare KB driver, if you have a hard time finding a suitable replacement
shoot me a message, if you have any trouble

I have a piece of equipment that has a Dart drive and it works flawlessly. Pretty easy to set up also. Not sure of the cost.

My lathe runs a Baldor PM 1-1/2 HP motor on a KBMG 212 drive. It has worked perfectly. OK a lightning strike fried the drive but...

I’ve used 6 of the used KB controllers over th years without any problems.

Switching a drive between two motors isn't advised for the same reason as with vfds, damage to the output stage can occur if switched under power.
That may be what happened to yours.
The KB and Dart drives are both good. I think Dayton made one also in a cute little box- sometimes seen on Ebay

The KBMD uses a braking resistor which I assume works fine but is an extra part that generates heat. I prefer the KBMG 212 which uses regenerative braking. It has adjustments for acceleration/deceleration as well as an e-stop that stops more quickly. Used would be fine if you can find it.
I confess I do not know about shunt wound motors and whether that might play into the decision.

It seems to be in stock (and on sale). Did you call and they told you it's out of stock?

I actually tried to order it from walker industrial and they called and told me it had been backordered forever. I then called Galco and got the same answer. It sounded like they both had big orders in to KB that hadn't been delivered do to chip shortages so. I hadn't actually thought to try and order directly from KB since I assumed they would also be out of stock buy I'll give them a call and see if they have it. Thanks.
