Dang Shipping

Tried to use my lathe the other day and its useless till I buy/mount a new chuck. Would not grip the 3/8 bolt I had to turn down, stuck a drill chuck with a 1 inch arbor in the the chuck and that failed. I picked out a 10 inch Shars chuck and mounting plate that I can maybe use. put it in the cart, and shipping is close to $160. Have to save up, or go elsewhere.

Have you looked closely at your current chuck? I'd take it apart to see if you can identify the problem. It may just be a matter of lubrication, squaring the jaws, or avoiding a particular locking socket.

It is missing 2 pinions, .006 out of round, jaws are worn. Would not grip a 3/8 bolt the other day. It’s toast.

Have you tried holding the bolt in some copper pipe with a slit hacksawed in it. Might take up some of the slop and protect the threads.
