Hi all.
I could use some advise from you on how to handle a new $11K lathe purchase from PM I made last year and received in mid Feb of this year.
This lathe is a Chinese 1440-2V and I have had nothing but problems with this thing from the moment it was delivered off the truck.
The lathe was skidded wrong and it had fell through the skid denting the panels, tool box with tool holders and I was told from PM that they do not stock parts for it and I need to bend them back and it could take months to get replacements. I bit my tong and moved on. Next I found that the carriage stop was cast wrong and was hitting the ways wiper which destroyed it so PM sent me a new one to fix.
I then found that both rests were cast wrong and the rollers would not lock into place so PM had to send me new ones to replace those. Keep in mind that PM does not stock any parts so each time this took several months each part to order.
About 4 months ago I started noticing an oil leak under the lower gear box. It is not possible to see where it is leaking from but I am sure it is most likely the casting but I had a gasket ordered just to try first. This has taken several weeks to get and I am still waiting.
About 2 weeks I now noticed that the upper gear box was leaking oil around the for/rev shaft.
Today I saw a few drips of oil under the carriage and after looking at it, it appears its leaking out of the carriage wheel shaft with a possibility of the casting as well.

I have never purchased a new lathe and wonder should I expect this from a new lathe and if not what should my next steps be? At this point it could take many months to fix and to be honest I don't have the time nor feel I should have to take this entire lathe apart to fix it.
I almost forgot that I have a noise in the gear box in high range that also concerns me
Am I asking to much to want to send it back and make them fix it or get my money back and purchase a Taiwanese lathe?

Here is a pic of the chip pan today and the other leaks on the lathe
Any thoughts??

I try to steer people to the 't' series at PM, as the Taiwanese lathes cost more but are better. Not perfect, but far fewer problems,. I'm glad the PM has been helping your out; it is more work that you can imagine getting parts out of China...

Usually suppliers choose a Secondary lower priced option because of market pressures: people hear that 'the same lathe' is 2000$ cheaper at xx, and the reputable firms that support their lathes have no option but to supply a lathe at around that price point. Unfortunately that lower price point comes with baggage. If you can afford the upgrade, see what PM can do.

Won’t pretend to give you advise on this, but I will ask if the machine has been capable of making the parts you wanted to make.

I’ve only had old machines that leak oil and require fixing on the regular. It sounds like PM is doing what they can to keep you happy but if what you want is the next step up that always comes with a price tag.

Maybe this is a discussion that you should be having with Matt….

I would contact PM and tell them the lathe suffered catastrophic damage when it was dropped during delivery and you need help of an extraordinary manner. As many irritating things as a Chinese machine can manifest this is far worse, unusual even. Not taking a swipe at you; but you should not have accepted delivery if the machine was obviously dropped and/or the crate had apparent damage.
