When i Finally got my nose piece out of the spindle and I put the backplate on three times each time with good repeatability checking with the indicator. When I try to take the backplate off I realized it was quite stuck.
It is a buck chuck backplate, for a set tru 6" 3 jaw chuck.
There are no holes for a bar except the threade holes for the chuck body.
Should i assemble the chuck on the spindle and then use the chuck key w/out the spring and give a good wack with my dead blow hammer 50oz. /rubber coated?
any help is greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Jon

I always mill holes in the plate so I can use a spanner to break it loose.

I had this exact thing happen a few months ago on a 2-1/4 8 spindle. The backplate had voids which caused the cut to bang. So I put a little drag on the outside of the plate to reduce the bang, and save the backgears. THIS got the back plate on good and tight!! Hah hah! Lesson learned.

I used an old leather weight belt and a two-foot bar and made a huge strap wrench. I then ran the machine slow, backwards, in backgear. I arranged the bar and belt to grip the backplate, but fall apart if I let go or pulled the bar to the side, if something went wrong.

Excellent advice here.

Please don't start hitting your new chuck with a hammer.

Since you don't have the chuck on there right now you could drill a couple of holes in some flat stock and bolt that tightly to the front of the plate using the existing bolt holes. You'd just need two of them. Make the flat bar two feet long and a couple of whacks with your palm should be enough to loosen the plate.
Thanks,
i don't want to hit the chuck with a hammer, your idea is great, but how to get it off if chuck was bolted on, would i have to take the chuck off, from the backplate, and bolt a 2' steel piece to get the chuck off the spindle.
Thanks,
Jon

If the chuck is on the back plate, put a piece of hex stock in the chuck and then use a wrench on the hex stock to unscrew it.

How'd it go?

Hi bernie and everyone,
i have to admit i was afraid of damaging something after some of the warnings posted.
Still cant get it to budge, even had a friend drop buy and we both tried, and failed.
My next choice will be to assemble the chuck and put a hex in the chuck and grab the hex with a 8-10" adj wrench, just hitting it with my hand.
I hope this is correct
thanks
