A long time ago I was visiting a workshop and was amazed to see a very old lathe with cords attached to the cross slide and saddle that ran over crude pulleys and had weights hanging on them just to keep the slack one way .More amazing is that it seemed to be turning out good work. Or perhaps it was just the good old boy running it?
