Nice sentiment Dave, thanks. I'm still pretty much "ballast" though. :tounge: ;)

Nothing like learing by being put on the spot! Actually, I'm willing to bet that most here aren't all that proficient. Making one of something is a lot easier than making 10 or 12 that have to be all the same.

Back when I was learning to fly, I did most of my landings on our 200 foot wide runway. I was all over the place. Never down the center line. Then the instructor took me up the valley to Vernon. 35 foot wide runway. I had no problem keeping it right down the line. After that, I told myself that I only had the painted lines down the center to land on . No more problem.

All that to illustrate this: When we are faced with working to a tighter standard, we can very often hit it. Sometimes the first time, sometimes after a remake or two. Having a specific measurement to machine may seem daunting, but if you just take it slowly and feed in a few thou at a time, then check, check, check, you will find that you can do it. And you'll grow by it.

This will be a great project for all of us.

Part of this thing will be to learn to do something that you have never done. In fact, it might be best if it is approached that way. I've taken lathe guys who never ran a mill in their lives, and mill guys who never ran a lathe in their lives. I wanted to broaden their experience level. In all but a couple of cases, it worked to their advantage and I found I had great mill operators hidden away in lathe work and lathe guys hidden in mill operators. I think it would add to the challenge.

And remember, this entire forum is at the group's disposal for advice and instruction.

How about the beginner engine from HMEM? Maybe with a few enhancements?

Or, are people looking for something a bit more complicated or with more parts? I've always wanted to do Elmer's mill engine as well.

An engine sounds good. I've always wanted to build one...

With that said depending on what the final plans are and the time frame I would be interested
