Community Build Project

I have a idea!!! What if you would say design a special lathe tool for $20 max. in material, just plans only, and see what you come up with, maybe someone could use that tool and have never thought of it. It's go to be a special tool, not something that everybody has. Maybe someone could expand on the idea and change the design to make something almost the same but different. I thing it would be a challenge given the paramaters. If someone likes the idea then they could make it for themself and post. I have done things like this in the past and I still have the tools to prove it. Any comments?

Plenty of weather and famine disasters this year. We could send the proceeds to one of those.

All Great Ideas, yet few have suggested what the project or projects might be. Preferably something useful whether it be a tool or machine of sorts!

Please count me in!

I'd be interested if it was, say, tooling for the lathe or mill. I really like the idea of a knurling tool or something like that.

Not in if it's for charity, as I have very specific causes that I donate to, and exclude certain other ones. Once burned, twice shy.

I have no idea of how this will work, but I am game for a try.

Okay, Turbo. Count me in. If necessary, I can help with a bit of CAD work.

I'll sit this one out please. -Why - you don't need me.

No offense, but we don't want you. Before you get upset, let me explain. Group builds usually have each member making a number of parts (equal to the number of builders +1), and mailing them to all the other members. You, being on another continent, may make the cost prohibitive. Mailing 10 parts to 10 different guys can be as cheap as an envelope or maybe a couple of bucks each for a larger part like a cylinder. Mailing to England last year cost me a lot more than I expected.

I'd personally like to see all the guys in other geographic areas - say all Aussies - get together for their own parallel build. Maybe not the same project (based on number of people participating) but happening at the same time.

Also, I think that anyone who does make some larger parts (a crankcase, for instance) should somehow be reimbursed by the other members for the extra mailing and material costs. This will probably complicate things, but I can't see that tossing in a couple of dollars when mailing something small like a piston rod would be too much to ask.

Since I opened my mouth earlier in the thread I guess I'm in by default. :tounge: I'm not sure just what I can provide with just a lathe and the little experience I have with it but what the heck. Measure once and cut twice, right? ;)
