Would there be enough interest to design some item, complete with dimensions and have several members in each geographical area each make a part. Then the guys from that area arrange to get together to tweak and assemble the item. There would then be several copies of the same item/tool/whatever being built at the same time. The design could be modified along the way as agreed within each group.

I had a flash of the last guy in the progressive chain spending next year's tool budget sending the finished item on. By meeting in a reasonably central location for assembly, everyone faces about the same burden. And we get a chance to put a few names and faces together.

Obviously, there will be some areas where the members are too few and far between to do this, but a forum topic with a thread for each group would allow all to join in the entertainment/advice.

Sounds like lots of fun and terrifying too. For a beginner like my self, it's that whole what if I fail thing. :( :( :) :) :) :) @#@#@#
Jerry :) :) ;0

Is not better to try and fail (at first) then not ever try at all??? After all, if it were not for mistakes, many of us would not be here!

Sounds excellent to me although I'm a little far away
But I would be fine in sending a part or two to another group.

Ah, Just noticed my location, etc. is not showing. I shall get onto that one.
Am one of the new Aussies here and always looking for a challenge/project.

Get the interest first, you need the guys and then you can decide on the project between you all.

I am pretty sure that I haven't yet developed the skills to participate in something like this but I have a couple of suggestions to ponder.

If the number of participants is limited to say, a dozen, why not have each person make a dozen of whatever small part they are assigned? When the "project" is done each member would have a copy of the project. Now, if the project selected were some kind of lathe tool, say a fancy knurling tool, ball turner, etc. then everyone would end up with a neat custom tool for minimal investment in time and money.

Just a thought,

What about everyone (who's interested) has a go at making their own version of the "project" and posts photos of it and the techniques they use to create it. Would be a good way for everyone to get involved. Us machining newbys could share our mistakes and see the different techniques the more experienced members use to make it. :)

I like the idea but I think it could be problematic depending on the project as not everyone has the same level of skill or equipment. I don't have a mill yet, for example, if the project required milling I would be dead in the water (or making a quick purchase, most likely upsetting the wife, then I'd be plain "dead". ;) ).
