My 2 cents on this: I recently had to repair an Italian made machine with 10mm snap rings. I broke two of them getting them off with my set of Lang pliers. Small snap rings suck! Went to my local hardware store and got the needed ones plus a spare. Cost 60 cents for the 3 pieces.
I have sets of many hardware items that I've gotten from McMaster-Carr over the years. They list what specifications their products meet. Typically ISO.
Now that I'm retired I still do some repair work and having common hardware items saves a lot of time. I have bought HF hardware when the local HW store didn't have the good stuff, almost always regretted it.
