Changing knurls on LMS knurler.

I was pretty happy with my new knurler until I decided to try one of the coarser knurls that came with it.

The knurls are held on with an impossibly small snap ring and even with a proper tool, it seems about impossible to get them off.

Email from LMS says to push the pins out with an arbor press or pin punch.

This seems a bit destructive and a pretty poor response.

Any ideas here?

Thanks,

Jack

Snap ring pliers won’t work? The picture on the LMS website suggests that with the proper pins one should be able to pop them right off. Maybe the groove in the pin is undersized?

A picture might help…

I went to LMS site to get an idea of what you have . Yes those are different, i happened to read Chris’s Tips and he says those are pretty much one time use clips and to replace with standard 1/4” external snap rings from a hardware store . If yours are like the ones pictured on there site they might not be a spring material . You might be able to spread them open by prying with 2 small screwdrivers , putty knife , maybe even just come in from the open end with a flat piece of metal and tape it off with a hammer . https://littlemachineshop.com/products/product_view.php?ProductID=1911&category=

This makes me laugh . Whenever I have to fix the chains under the lines , I always take 3 times as many master links that are required . Most times , I have to go back for more . Must be 1000s of the clips hiding out somewhere . :big grin:

An " easy out " for that fix would be to go with appropriately sized shoulder bolts with nylock nuts . I have to fight those darn clips and hate them and usually swap them out for something easier to install while laying on your back in the dark .

My guess is you have universal snap ring pliers? Ones with changeable tips? Yea good luck with those, even the snap on ones suck. Just because it seems right, the geometry isn't. Find a lang 12 piece set (made the same stile for many other manufactures) or even better but more money is the knipex set. Both make quick work of small snap rings that others with changeable tip pliers struggle with.

Thanks for all the replies. My respect for LMS has been reduced in direct proportion.

I think I will opt for the screw and nylock if I get bold enough to knock out the pins.

Of a more general nature....

I tried this thing on plastic of several types and managed to stall the machine while producing near zero knurl.

Is there something I am missing here?

well, if you read Chris's tips he explains it all there. So not sure why you have a problem with it. You could have read it before you purchased it and decided against it. My own personal view is he was very up front about it. Kudos to him.

Try having the knurler wheel 1/2 on the part to be knurled with the other half in air. Turn on lathe and start tightening the wheels until you can see a clear knurl pattern forming, with a cross hatch. Then slowly hand feed the knurl. You do need lubricant for knurling.

Who is Chris and I saw no such tips in the description before purchasing.

On the other hand, if they didn't include the extra knurls, I would probably be doing something else right now.

It just bothers me that someone would continue selling a product for 20 years that has such a design flaw and not fix it.
