I've had to wear glasses for the last 40 years with stronger and stronger lenses as the time went by.
Last week I had a cataract removed from one eye and replaced with a fixed lens for long vision.
I went this route because I didnt want the spikes and halos from the more advanced lenses when looking at point source light sources. (astronomy)
I never realised how awful my vision had become.
In the new eye colours are cleaner and brighter and obviously sharper, the tv is brighter.
In my other eye colours are a dirty shade, ie, good eyes white looks white, in the other eye white looks a dirty cream.
I am really impressed with how much better my sight has become.
I cant wait for the op on the next eye.
I will still need glasses for reading but that was a decision I'm willing to live with.
If any of you have suspect eyesight I really would suggest get the test and if required go for the surgery as the end result is fantastic.

I'm going to have to deal with this soon. Night driving has become harder because of my small cataracts, the diffraction is quite disconcerting. One of those things we have to deal with as we age. Glad that your vision has improved. Still looking forward to your progress on the giant binoculars. What an amazing project!

Charles I am sooo glad to hear that.
The surgery for my left eye is scheduled for early October.
Same as you I am planning on a plain lens and fixed long focus, knowing that I'll still need reading glasses later.

I am looking forward(pun intended) to being able to dip the filler metal in the puddle, instead of behind or in front of it.......

Welcome to my world. For those of you who mentioned you choose/chose the single non-flex lens you have done well. My brother went with the fancy lens two years ago. He is an avid shooter and is not horribly pleased with them.

I had cataracts removed from both eyes 2 years ago. I chose the fixed lenses for far vision and use 1.5 reading glasses for up close vision. It works great for me.

I went with the auto focus version several years ago. The halos were there in the beginning but have now gone away. I can see well both near and far. I'd do the same again. PS: the standard fixed focus version is covered by insurance the optional auto focus version adds about $8K that I had to pay, but worth it. no glasses required.

I first noticerd a problem three to four years ago. Walking the dog through our woods, I noticed a haze from filtering sunlight. Kind of likr driving with a dirty windshield. Two years ago, my ophthalmologist told me that, at 77, I was seven years ahead of the game. Most people start to develop cataracts at 70. My cataracts aren't too bad yet and mostly affect my left eye. I am due for my annual total vision checkup in two weeks so I will get an update then.

For those of you who have had the surgery, what are your experiences regarding glasses? Are bifocals sufficient or would I need to go to trifocals. I got my first prescription glasses six months ago and on the advice of others, went with high end progressive lenses. For far distance there is a central sweet spot where they are in focus above or below or left or right, everything is fuzzy. This is almost a hazzard when driving as I can't bring approaching vehicles from the lefy into focus. I traded one pair in for a straight distanc vision prescription. So getting your experiences post op will be helpful. I will probably need glasses in any case because of my astigmatism.

I have cataracts too but they're not affecting my vision to the extent that I need lens replacement surgery yet. One interesting result of having them is that I have become less near-sighted. That's how I discovered I had cataracts -- I noticed the vision in my right eye was _better_ with NO glasses on.....

I had my left eye done about 6 years ago. Wasn't given any options for lenses? They said the right one would need to be done soon, but it hasn't changed according to my eye doctor.
