I LIVE IN INDIANA AND HAVE AN ABUNDANT SUPPLY OF WHITE ASH, SHAG BARK HICKORY AND PERSIMMON WOOD. ALL MY HANDLES ARE AIR DRIED 5-15 YEARS BEFORE USE. I USE HICKORY FOR CANT HOOKS, PEVE HANDLES AND LOG TONGS, ASH FOR LONG HANDLE TOOLS, SLEDGE HAMMERS AND AXE HANDLES. I USE PERSIMMON FOR HATCHETS, HAMMER, CHISEL HANDLES, LATHE TOOL HANDLES AND TOMAHAWK HANDLES. ALL MY WEDGES ARE MADE OF PERSIMMON AND FITTED LIKE A MT3 SOCKET TAPER, NOT JUST A SAWN SLIT IN THE HANDLE. THE KEY TO A LONG HANDLE LIFE IS AN EXCELLENT FIT WITH THE HANDLE DRIVEN ON THE HEAD 75% OF THE WAY AND SOAKED IN KEROSENE FOR 24 HOURS. I WIPE MY HANDLES DOWN A MINIMUM OF ONCE A YEAR WITH KEROSENE. GOOD LUCK.
