This is a 4 part series by Mr. Pete. A great project for the beginner that wants to grind their own HSS lathe tool bits. I will post all 4 links.

it is only my opinion but making our own shop made tools is what makes our hobby so satisfying. Enjoy

Part #1

I agree, it's very satisfying to be able to make your own tooling. Frustrating sometimes, as it can lengthen the time to make the original item. Nonetheless, you now have the tooling to do something similar. Easy to adapt it for the next task.

Another whiz-bang gadget to substitute for a skill anyone can (and should) pick up with a few minutes practice

I think it's a pretty cool gadget, but would have to agree with @markba633csi . It might make for a good project for an intermediate machinist, but a simple tilting grinder table (some table is required with this in any case) is best, imo, for learning to grind. After minimal use of the table, free hand grinding is easy. Later, some fixturing might be handy for those needing precise control of complex angles - but that's not often required in the home shop.

I'd have to agree with that, but with one big caveat.....
When you're first starting out, what is the bit supposed to look like?

I saw that eons ago when he put it up. I kinda thought that this gadget looked like a decent set of training wheels. Although I almost remember (I'm at work, not watching it again), but I think it cut a tool to be presented in an Armstrong holder at some angle other than horizontal? That might matter to someone.

I somewhat agree with your philosophy but the idea here is to give the beginning hobbyist a simple tool to build and learn from the experience of building it. Not everyone on here is a professional. Remember this is a hobby forum.

I'm hardly a pro- but my HS shop teacher insisted on us learning it back in '72
No fixture, just you and the grinder in a love embrace
