For what I'm going to use the Barker for it really isn't necessary to use the rack. I'm going to set it up for gear cutting. For that purpose it is easy enough to adjust the Z with the dial. I think the rack and handle only comes into play for production jobs.
I have it almost reassembled. I'll see if there is enough travel in the Y to cut the rack. I have the cutter and the stock.
This is a sweet little machine. Don't quite know why I let it sit in a corner for so long.
While assembling the machine I noticed that the rack can not be used if the micrometer adjustment is installed and the micrometer adjustment cannot be used if the rack is installed.
Therefore I have decided to forget the rack and go with the micrometer Z adjustment.
