Apple Charging Station

Well I suppose I’m just advertising my ignorance here. But isn’t the reason it’s made of plastic because they put magic smoke inside, to wirelessly charge devices?
Yes. It took me a while to determine that...

Ah! That's the Apple Magsafe design!
Yes, they are different from the Qi chargers!

You should be good to go with your charger!

Enlighten me on this. I thought Qi charger would also work on Apple devices? What happens if you use a Qi charger on a metal table? Is this heating a known problem?

Here's a Qi charger without the plastic:
No real difference between that and an induction heating coil.
If it powers up with a conductive surface next to it, the conductor will start heating, just like an induction cook top.
The idea is that the power coil makes sure that there is a receiver there before it gets serious...

Hmmm. More digging. I thought Apples version had a magnetic core in it... it doesnt.

Looks like that magsafe DOES have a ferrite element in it to keep the back side field away from the aluminim shell.

Here is where I am...sort of. I made scrap out of the base due to a math error. (Sin20 x .375...duh the base is .500 thick) I am going to remake it and use .750 thick to add some weight. It takes considerable force to pull the phone free and a heavier base will move less.

Thicker base (with the holes in the right place)
