Was surfing FB marketplace the other day and deleted a few "skeevy" ads I didn't want to see. Then started to get messages in my FB messenger form these same ads.

Apparently, "sellers" can set an "auto reply" if you do anything with their ad. Open it, delete it, report it, whatever. Touch it in any way and get your messenger flooded.

I find this even more "skeevy" and if I want to block a "skeevy" ad from my feed, I feel I shouldn't be getting messages from them. That just defeats the purpose of deleting them.

It all just leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

We all know FB makes it damned near impossible to find these settings in the options.

Anyone know how to block these "auto-replies"?

There must be a setting for it somewhere, but once again.....well, you know: facebook.

Something else I've noticed is I'm seeing ads that have a description along the lines of "1989 Maserati" and the picture is an old utility trailer or things like that. Is that sellers just being stupid or is facebook filling in the titles with "whatever" if the seller leaves it blank?

It's almost worth dumping FB altogether now, even if marketplace does have some uses. But I'm rapidly approaching the "BS saturation point" with it.......I don't use facebook other than marketplace, but I've just about had my fill of it. Seems to be mostly scammers, overpriced junk or dating/thinly veiled porn sites now anyways....

I can't believe I've got every setting I can find in FB turned "off" or set to "private" and this kind of crap still comes through. Maybe there's a setting in the actual "messenger app", but I refuse to download another FB tracking program so they can make even more money off my personal data (ie: where you buy things, what you buy, who you talk to, where you go, etc).

Why does it seem that human nature is to create something useful and then turn it into something disgusting/skeevy as soon as possible?

I guess I'm kind of ranting now, so I'll end it here.

Mmmm.....................................links please ? JK . Yes , market place has gone down hill lately . I hate to use them but sometimes the stuff sells from legitimate buyers .

Well, eff it. Just deleted all the FB stuff from my devices.

FB has been peeing me off for a while now, time to cut the cord.

Too bad I’ll loose contact with the few friends I had on there around the globe, but it is what it is…

You know, the truth is, I’ve been pulling off the internet more and more lately. Too much crap, garbage, scams and porn everywhere….

I’m pretty much exclusively on this site, ebay occasionally and a bit of internet banking. Other than that its just to google a specific piece of info….

Yes! One less buyer on the marketplace, snatching all the deals out from under me! Haha!

My experience with marketplace has been that if I find something I want, it’s sold by the time I find it. Or it’s 700 miles away…

Anyways you’ll be back. They all come back eventually. But good luck!

If it isn't obvious how a free platform makes money, then their product is you.

It is getting harder to curate a clean feed since they decided to monetize everything. Monitoring behavior, using AI...

I miss libraries and print classifieds and dinner out without people photographing their food and posting on farcebook.

Don’t think you’ve got much to worry about from me buying up your stuff.

We’re in different countries and about 3000 kms apart.

Nope, not coming back other than to check for a message from long acquaintances every 6 odd months. Other than that, I’m off the social media wheel. Never been on twitter, instagram, my space, etc…used to be on sites like 6x6world, audiokarma, etc.

But they’re all either dead or full of “jump down your neck” a-holes these days.

Internet (forums and social sites) is not really worth it anymore…tired turning the other cheek just to get it slapped by the next a-hole keyboard warrior hiding behind a screen.

The online world has pretty much defaulted to “mean” and I want no more part of it.

I buy and sell on FB marketplace quite often and I have not "yet" experienced such shenanigans. I have reported suspicious/inappropriate ads & content but I have never been contacted by anyone other than FB "moderators" after taking those actions. Often the response says the reported content is "Within the FB community standards" and no action will be taken...

Personally I have detested ALL the social media sites ever since they came out and only use messenger to chat to rellies living on the other side of the globe.

Facebook was a valuable tool for keeping touch with family during combat deployments . It was much faster than e-mail. But I’ve been off the platform since. I use my wife’s to look at marketplace.
As far as meanness on the internet goes, I get it. People are a holes, but they’re also awfully helpful, and kind and generous too I’m sure I’ve annoyed, upset, or embarrassed people(mostly unintended). But don’t give up on us entirely. We’re still going through some growing pains with this hive mind experiment.
Too many people throw in the towel, and we’re courting the words of John Stuart Mill : “Let not any one pacify his conscience by the delusion that he can do no harm if he takes no part, and forms no opinion. Bad men need nothing more to compass their ends, than that good men should look on and do nothing. He is not a good man who, without a protest, allows wrong to be committed in his name, and with the means which he helps to supply, because he will not trouble himself to use his mind on the subject.”

You have quit facebook...you have done well.
