Any online metal supply recommendations?

Hello,

I have local metal shops where I buy all my steel for welding and other items I make but when it comes to stainless or aluminum they are a bit outrageous in price. They also don't tend to stock thick aluminum blocks and such. Their drops can be reasonable and I do take advantage of that from time to time but when I have a project in mind and I need a specific piece, I can't rely on finding a drop. I have seen some fairly reasonable prices on line, some more than others, I figured, someone here has probably done the research and has a favorite supplier or two for thick or specific metals they need. Any suggestions or favorites of yours?

Thanks,
Greg

Greg,
I use Speedy Metals for specific and odd pieces they are a little pricey but I think most of the price is in shipping. I’m in the Houston area and they are in Missouri, I think.

Thanks I will look them up. Shipping is where it always seems to get pricey. Which I get but what is funny is, I order a 1.25" X 32" stainless rifle barrel and the shipping is $10, I order the same piece in Stainless from a metal place and the shipping is $30. But I go to a local place and net it is $25 more than the shipping and everything from online. Its quite a thing they have going on. In these cases I generally stumble upon the fair priced place and good deals on the shipping, it just takes a while to find that place but they normally exist.

Thanks again,
Greg

Used Xometry a few times and found their prices were not too bad.

I use Online Metals for stuff I can't get from my local supplier. I've also found that good deals are available on
eBay, though availability of what you need can be spotty. I still almost always have a look though.

Yeah if you need just one random piece then 6061dude is a great source.
I think I may have ordered an individual piece or two, but usually order in bundles of 2 to 6 pieces of each size/type from him. ymmv

It's always good to do some comparative shopping which is time consuming but worthwhile IMHO. Another eBay guy I use is steeldawg. He seems to be at a mill and has all kinds. of drops. He also periodically has class 40 durabar cast iron for reasonable prices. All of them you have to check the details like are cheaper price but scam on the shipping.
