Greetings! New member here, and new to the hobby of home machining. I have acquired a Logan lathe Model 1920, and a Jet JMD-18 Drill / Mill. I am beginning to acquire some tooling so I thought I would ask some advise regarding a Vise for my Drill/Mill. I know that Kurt Vises are some of the best, but my budget does not allow for that. I am looking at a Vevor

VEVOR High Precision Milling Vice 6 Inch,Bench Clamp Vise Nodular Cast Iron Material,Flat Clamp Vise Mill Vise for Milling Drilling Machine and Precision Parts Finishing

Would this vise be a good one to use on my Jet JMD-18 Mill?
Appreciate your thoughts

A 6 inch vise is probably too big for a mill drill. I have a full size Bridgeport type mill and the 6 inch is as big as will fit on it. With import anything it is hit and miss with quality. If you buy an import vise , check it out closely as soon as you receive it. If it doesn’t meet specifications return it. I have an import collet chuck that makes a good door stop. As far as import tooling Shares seems to be better than most. Good luck. I would be leery of anthing vevor. Just me.

Thank you for that. I will visit Shars site.

James (Clough42) has been very pleased with his Tegara vises from SHARS. I suggest looking at the 440 and 550; the website shows overall dimensions so you can make cutouts of the footprints to see which makes the most sense.

What ever you decide on, don’t waste your money on a swivel base: most of us have never used the one we removed from our vises years ago!

What nonsense! I use my swivel-base at least once every 4-5 years... ;-)

I strongly suggest going with the very best vise you can afford. It's just not a place to cut any corners.

I have a machine similar to yours. Table 9-1/2” x 31-1/4”
This is what a 5” vise looks like on it, I’m pleased with the size, a 4” vise would also be fine IMHO.
I got the vise on Amazon years ago, it’s very accurate for a knock-off, maybe I just got lucky.
I’ve never used the swivel base that came with it, but a member here has fixtured a rudimentary poor man’s rotary table with his swivel base, & If it doesn’t add much $$ & you have no RT, buy it.
I would also avoid Vevor, i purchased a 5” 3 jaw chuck from them for very cheap, bad idea, probably will offload it with a full disclosure.
And I agree, buy the best vise U can afford.

I see some nice things that you added to your mill like the key ring to hold the limit switch wire and the flat under the bolt holding the vise to the table. What is the what looks like 1/4" x 1 " flat stock on the rear stationary jaw of the vise. Thanks

I have owned an RF-40 clone. A 4" vise is a good fit.
I now have the Tegara 440 on my PM-833TV. This is unique (I think) in that it has a 6" max jaw opening. That makes it very versatile.

Very pleased with the quality.
