Whenever I first load the page I see no alerts flagged, but often some approval queue flags are present (a number in red), so I know it has loaded.

If I refresh the web page then I immediately see a non-zero alerts count in red, often 6-10 items.
I doubt those items are all new in the last few seconds.

It's like the alerts count is not refreshed on first load.

Obviously there's a work-around, so it is a minor issue.

I've noticed the alerts behavior differ on Xenforo. There are 3 forums I frequently visit that run Xenforo & they all behave differently. I won't explain their differences in behavior as it's irrelevant but here on H-M, click on the bell/alerts icon which should expand a drop down.

For each alert line, on the lower right corner look for any that have a solid blue dot. If you have any those are the ones causing what you are seeing. Once read it will turn into an outline dot or whatever it's called. Here on H-M it does this cause it first alerted you when it came up as new but you haven't actually read it yet.

And in case you weren't aware, you can also click on any read/outline dots to mark them as unread (turn them back to solid).

Oh wait, my mistake, you were talking about the approval queue. Please disregard my prev post. :)

Will,

The count that seems off is not the approval queue, but the alerts

On first opening the site I see:

but then if I refresh within the browser I see a count on the "alerts" bell icon.
Perhaps I do just need to click on it, but that's different than previous..... maybe I just need to upgrade my thinking too!

I just re-read your post, this time with my reading glasses! Boy did I misread what you said, lol, must have been a long day.

Ok, so my initial post was related to what I thought you was saying all along. But then again I got my forums mixed up. What I mentioned happens on a different forum. I justed tested it, here on H-M it functions the way I like it with no "residual ghost" alerts.

Sorry Brian, I have no clue what's going on in your case. I should go rest now. Haha!

Ok, here's a couple of ideas to try, still somewhat related to what I was saying I guess.

Click the alert icon, at the bottom of the drop down, click Show All. In the new page that opens up, do you see any alerts with the solid blue dot, if yes mark them read.

Or even simpler, click the alert icon, at the bottom of the drop down, click Mark Read.

Does that fix it?

Will I think that's the opposite of what I want.
I see no alerts until I refresh the page.
But I did do it in case it has some overall affect on the unread count.

When I first open the site I see this:

Then immdetaitely when I refresh the page in the browser I see this:

....as if the count is NOT calculated and displayed properly on first load.

Not a big deal, as simply refreshing the page works.

Oh interesting, sorry Brian, I have not encountered that type of behavior before, no idea what is causing that.

That is strange Brian. I'm not sure I can explain this easily. I'll keep an eye on it though.
