A better way to oil your machines.

Hello Jim,

A couple questions from a beginner if you don't mind. I know of zerk fittings for greasing, but I don't know what a git fitting is. The only lathe I've worked with was an older South Bend, and I seem to remember it having the little oil cups for the change gears, is that what you're talking about? Also, regarding this oiler, what is the bottom line for? I've only used the hand held kind with a springy bottom or a pistol grip lever. Thanks for the information though, this was a really interesting piece to look at! Coincidentally we're not all that far apart either, I'm in Poulsbo! Thanks!

David

Hi David, Git oilers usually have a brass body with a spring loaded ball to seal the opening. These are used extensively on import machines. Here is a picture of one on my Grizzly 10 x 22. The clear vinyl hose coming out of the bottom is the output of the pump. The other end has the brass fitting with an "O" ring that is placed against the Git fitting then when the pump is stroked oil is injected into the cavity.

If you ever in the neighborhood stop by.

Jim,
Congratulations on you're project win.:man:
That is a very professional setup.
How about pictures of any other tooling you have made, and posting photo's of what looks to be a very tidy workshop......................Please.
Kindest Regards
Beagles.

Hi Gary, that is the same arrangement as I had on squeeze bottle. In my case the tube that it was attached limited my access to a couple oilers. I first came across the "O" ring idea several years ago on a blog site but I do not remember which one. What did we do before the internet? Great way to pass around ideas.

Hey Jim, That can I showed in the picture is leaking from somewhere and I can't see from where. When ever I set it down the next day there is a ring
of oil around it. There has to be a micro hole in the bottom somewhere. Anyway I have a new one on order with a flexible spout. That will help me better
get to those hard to access places. I will make the same modification to it.

Hopefully I can save some oil by keeping more of it in the can, huh?

Gary

BTW I have the same chart on my wall.

Hi AirChunk, I have not removed many Git fittings. For the ones that I have removed I inserted a screw into the opening and then pulled the fitting out. The downside is that this method damages the fitting so if you want to reuse it you are out of luck.
