303 brass and 7.62x54 nagant brass

Work the bolt slowly while watching to see where and/or what the bullet is striking. Is it just the tip or along the body of the bullet?

I found some at graf and sons here just accross the river from us, i got 2 bags of 50ct and i got 3 boxes of privi ammo and i do reload with hornady have for 20 something yrs, i would like to have a go at making my own bullets but haven't tried it yet.i like hodgedon powder too i seem to get better performance out of it. you say you shoot 3" groups at 100yrds , I'm looking for 1"groups at 200yrds and this is with a bench rest if possible, don't know yet it might just be a wish but will take all the info i can. this is my sons rifle he got it at cabelas for a 100 bucks me i think i would have went with a Mauser or a 303 brit but i know he has 3 brits right now and they have been totally redone. i do have a question i have one mauser that boogers the bullet up as it loads it and i cant seem to find out why its a argentine mauser in 308 new barrel and it did this before the new barrel too, maybe someone on here knows.:biggrin:. mac

Yea, 3" is about my limit with the stock iron sights at 100 yards, some of the younger guys might do better. With the sierra match kings (168BTHP) my 308 will shoot under 1/2" for 5 all day long but it has pretty good glass on it, target trigger, and a heavy Savage barrel.

If you want some real fun try holding groups under 5" using your favorite surplus rifle and 60+year old mil surplus ammo. Had a nice 8mm Mauser using Turkish ammo from 1938 that wouldn't group under 8" (+/-)
It grouped much better with some fresh ammo.

I really like the surplus military stuff, but it's not my first choice for a bench rest gun. However if you like gunsmithing, or just playing around, there are few things better than a $100 rifle.

Got a picture of how your Mauser bungles bullets? How well does it chamber a round? Does the bolt close easy or hard?

the bolt moves nice and smooth no binding or to much play but i did notice about a hr ago while loading some dummy rounds that the shell is going in at a slight left angle which tells me it may be the end locking lug might be wore a bit if this is the case i will get another bolt, i'll have more time tomorrow, but i do know it is boogering the left side of the bullet up and that is a round nose bullet, i will try a spear point tomorrow and see if anything changes, as far as a 100.00 gun if the actions are good and smooth then their worth the money, barrels are pretty cheap now for new and in a few months i will prob be ready to make my first one, but i only do this for me. well i just tried a spear point and it does fine, will check the round nose tomorrow i think its hitting the edge of the chamber:thinking: mac

You guys are giving me the itch to drag out my old 8mm Mauser.

well dust it off and lock and load:biggrin: theirs always room for another mauser:biggrin:

With all this talk of axis weaponry, I may have to drag out my Garand. Just in case...

well pull that beast out, its bear hunting time lol, i always wanted a grand but the price just never allowed:biggrin: me lol

Well i found out why my mauser was boogering the tip of the bullet up, seems the silver tips by federal are not seated quit deep enough, i compared some winchesters i had to them and the windchester is about 1/16 deeper, so i took them back to bass pro and they exchanged them for some winchesters and they said they would contact federal and see whats up
at least thats a load off my mind:biggrin:

Before hunting season you can go to the ranges and get all the once fired brass you want. I got a forming die to make 308 out of 3006 works great. You just don't find many 308 around here.

Last time I went I found some 7.62X25 Brass, Only found 49 never did find the last one. Anyway I have a pistol that uses that ammo it was first made for machine guns.

ive been checking into that, i have boocu 3006 brass and i think you can make 8mil out of it too, i use the rcbs 2 die set for reloading and what i am reading says cut your brass to length them put in the sizer die, havent tried it yet though:thinking:
