I actually had this happen to me back in the mid 80's. I was in the Washington DC area on business/vacation and didn't have a return flight booked. I got a page from a customer on the west coast so needed to get back. So I walked into Washington National in the evening to see what flights were available. United had an unscheduled flight going to SFO, leaving in a bit. It was a non-rev repositioning flight so no passengers pre- booked. I think there was one other passenger on that 747, I had the aft cabin all to my self, it was a little strange.

We had that experience flying to the UK for Christmas. For some reason nobody wanted to fly three months after 9/11. We got moved up to business class and the stewardess kept us company with strawberries and champagne for most of the flight. While we were flying east, the shoe bomber was flying west.

I was the only one on a flight from Chicago to Omaha late one night. Made up for the times I spent the night in the airport because my incoming flight was too late to catch my out going flight and the morning flight was leaving @ 6AM. Flying used to be fun. In the '60s I could catch a flight from San Francisco to LA for $12 on PSA. They just lined planes up and filled them one after the other. None of that fancy stuff, no peanuts! They just pushed a ladder against the plane and you walked from the terminal to the plane. They were noted for their stews!
