Meter cans in the States have a rib in the middle to prevent such shenanigans. A piece of wire works so much better as it can be bent around such blocks. I have used "old timey" replacable blade fuses that have been cut in half to make the connections. Built prior to insertion, of course.

That's exactly how I've been keeping my power bill under $20/month by shunting the meter. That row of 60A breakers in my shop panel ain't no joke in this economy. Hell, my shop lights pull almost 2 kilowatts, a man's gotta get creative sometimes to afford those raw materials.
