2021 POTD Thread Archive

I wanted to make some smaller hold downs for my rotary table. Last week one day I made 7 T-nuts to fit it. I have plenty of 3/8" studs and a bunch of step blocks but no strap clamps to go with them.

In looking at how the step block engages the serrations and doing a little trig and thinking I found a angle cutter in the assortment that fit good in the step block. Only problem is it's a 1-1/4" bore and there's no arbor that size hanging on the board. I did remember that there is a 1-1/4" endmill holder that I bought for a big twist drill. So now to find a piece of 1-1/4" shaft and figure out how to put it all together. To my surprise there was a piece of a trailer axel that was already threaded and had a nut on it.

A little cleaning and sanding and band saw work and we now have a new arbor. It should have a keyway cut but it didn't slip today even though turned left-hand with a righthand nut. If I ever use it again I may cut a keyway then.

I'll update on the rest of the project when it's done.

Over the past couple days i bought a gallon of evapo rust for half off. This little 4 drawer tool box was at my grandmothers pole barn and when she passed away i decided i couldnt let it go. My grandfather use to do a lot of excavating so he use to have a lot of stuff in there. Most gone before i can remember. Going off tangent this little box was pretty rusty and had lots of taps and dies in there rusting away. Cleaned up the taps and dies and they came out very good. As you can see the drawers came out great and the box is to. My plan is to sand the drawers down and prime follow by a good spray paint over and a clear coat. I am worried how to handle the box however bc it is hard to sand down and i know there is still rust behind some of the panels but i am afraid to try and pop out any spot welds since i cant fix them to form the box again. Not sure what i am going to do next for that.
Well it took a little over 2 months but the box is finished minus handles. Once i get my taps on monday i can tap the handles and drive a brass screw in from inside the drawer. After i will peen the screw over so it wouldnt loosen up and back out. I wanted to go with a lighter green but i wasnt paying 10$ to get it shipped so i went with the copper Rustoleum.

Made a spring loaded stubby center for centering the tap wrench in the mill/lathe, just wanted something for quick tapping that was as short as possible. O1 steel and some brass, that latter didn't knurl very well, probably should of just made the cap out of O1. Works well and about as short as possible for T handle taps. I previously made short tap for the mill that just uses different tapping heads,

There is a special kind of satisfaction that one gets on restoring a past relative's possession. Way to go.

I've been working on a solid 4140 steel yarn winder since August. There have been a lot of fits and starts, but I'm finally to the point where I can spin the thing up!

There's a LOT of inertia here. I set the thing up on a stupid little plastic plate, so it's not as rigid as it will be when it's set up on a steel plate + walnut board.

I still need to cut some grooves for the o-rings and a V in the top of the yarn spool thingy to hold the start of the yarn, but I'm almost done!

Today the weather was nice and warm, so i got the spare rims out and washed and sanded them down with some wet sandpaper i'll try to fine the time paint them. The black one are going back to black, but i'm debating should i paint 4 of the lada rims also black.
