2021 POTD Thread Archive

I started at one end of my shop & fixed every issue that I have encountered (lack of access for sweeping up chips, files & lathe dogs too far from the lathe, TIG cups too far from welding bench, bikes in the way, etc.). Now the bikes are a little in the way walking in & out of the house, but I was more concerned about regaining my work area.

The pictures are panning around 360°.

Once more, with meaning. I only realized that I could've used the rotary table to cut the hole for the analog speed display after I had sprayed myself with Dremel slivers. As for the misappropriated cable labels, I'll replace them with something more durable as they fall off. Maybe. Also got some ethernet from a friend, so I'll be able to wire up all of the elements tomorrow or this weekend.

Knocked out the table covers as well. I would like to notch them so they fit in with the vise, but that's a low priority with how compact this model is. I ended up using spray adhesive for the keys.. which is maybe fine? Whatever; I'll never be even an amateurish woodworker, and I'm okay with that!

Nice place, plenty of oil stains on the concrete, definitely workshop, not for posing.

Today i've done an upgrade for the big garage, i've insulated the garage door and smaller side door. I've also put up some better (pink) insulation on the windows above the door. The difference incredible, few degrees warmer immediately, with the new 170 000 Btu heater i should be good to go for the winter.

I welded a fixture to hold a 6” lathe dog in a 4” vise. Then I shortened the straight tail of the dog by 2” so that I could use it on a 16” swing lathe.

Yesterday I got started on the power feed for my RF30 clone. I bought a cheap Vevor powerfeed that I'll have to adapt to fit. Need to enlarge the bore of the gear first. Got it dialed in the 4-jaw yesterday while my sweetie watched, completely intrigued by the process. She asked if she could watch the boring but I didn't feel well enough to try it. So today I sit on the couch trying to beat off whatever malady ails me.

Winter project.
Making a coolant reservoir for my 36 Chrysler. Could of bought an offshore metal or plastic one but decided to make it out of off cuts of 2" copper pipe and piece of nylon and SS strap. Holds about 4 cups which is enough as I made a PVC pipe version first to see what size I would need. A little cutting with saw, soldering of tubes and caps, setting up the milling vice on the lathe for the nylon block, drill some holes, aluminum clamp blocks and call it done. Now for the snow to go away.

Today after i dried up and warm up from pressure washing car parts, i got back in my machine shop and started another project. The project is to make an adjustable timing gear for the little Niva. I'm going to make it from two gears, like the one in the first picture. Before i can start making the gear i had to make an arbour to hold the gear by its hub, so i cut down the gear on the back of it so i have place the chuck it. Then i mounted it and began cutting it, the gear is hard but my lathe had no trouble cutting it. This part that i finish will be the hub i'll be making the outside from another gear. I hope you like seeing staff like this.
