2020 POTD Thread Archive

I could feel the grit in the mechanisms on a slow rotation by hand because of sitting for sew long (sorry about that pun)
No, you're not, you old sew-and-sew! Nor should you be. I consider the pun to be the most delightful form of humor. Love to stitch a whole thread of them together, given a topic ... or else make something up out of the whole cloth, bobbin' my head up and down as I do so.

As with many projects, I started off with a "need" and by the time I was done the part ended up being far more involved than I originally planned to do.

I wanted to make a spinning handle for the cross slide on my 7x10 lathe. At first I was just going to cut off the existing one and then find or make something to replace it. Then I remembered how much of a pain it was when that handle interfered with the carriage wheel's handle as I hand fed the wheel while turning. So that meant extending the cross slide handle a bit to gain clearance.

And then I decided that having a way to grip the cross slide handle for really small movements.

So I eventually ended up with this. crank.jpg

It's also the the most "multi-medium" thing I've made.....Delrin, steel hardware, aluminum crank and brass spinner. Works great, I can grip the Delrin cylinder for fine adjustments and the spinner really makes quick facing passes much easier.
