Thought I would share these parallels I made, I made them awhile ago, and they were just surface ground, but checking them on the plate they are bowed or convex, so I got to test out the lapping plate and am happy to report that it is working well, I am using 400 grit compound and it's taking several clean ups and recharging to get just one part flat and parallel

Need about 120 of these little devils; decorative knobs to go on some brass bands on 2 bookcases. .75" dia, about .20" thick with .25"X.625" tenon. ImageUploadedByTapatalk1454712952.670283.jpg

My busy with the CNC lathe is too busy and I hate doing long runs of repetitive crap, but had to have them. So after some head scratching I ground this tool

It let me plunge in .25"

Power feed at .25" DOC to a stop on the left

Then plunge in to part off

And a little deeper to bump the chamfer on the next part

A couple hours and 12' of 3/4" round brass stock and I'm left with this

And a hell of a mess to clean up

you bet ya!!!! lol
it almost didn't get done today...my welder crapped out....i got it to weld but something isn't quite right with it now

You might like this too Jim, it's the bottom of a 5c spindex, although after scraping and stoning the surface is very porous, lots of little tiny holes. I was trying out some white titanium dioxide as a contrast to the blue, not sure if I like it more than yellow oil paint mixed with Vaseline, or even as close to as much...20160204_162548.jpg

Something that I'm noticing while lapping the parallels is that even tho they are flat the entire length, maybe just a tiny flicker of the needle, the heat from my hands I think is making the edges lengthwise taller, so after it settles out the middle is a couple tenths taller. Idk maybe the steel is just really unstable and everytime something is done to it it moves

Well said mark, I agree with pretty much all you say, but I think you should all Google ztfab, it's pure weldporn, the guy is like a friggin robot when it comes to controlling any type of welding torch
Can't find any videos on youtube of ZTFab welding anything. can you send me a link?

Dan ,
Do you damp the foam ,put it in the freezer then use a dremel to take out the bits you don't want or do you do it soft and free hand with a knife ?
I'm asking because I'm thinking of getting a quality hard 4 inch or so case like yours , with full insets and sculpting them to take the 25 or so items my gal uses for her bonsai hobby .. if it works well maybe in a year or so when the foam is getting well worn get to making up some light birch ply inserts , grinding the profiles out then varnishing it all and putting in retaining straps such as Velcro strips

Can you also tell me where you purchased the case or better still give me a link to it please
Dave

Toollmaster has it, it's "Pick 'N Pluck" foam.

I purchased this case from B&H when i ordered the camera. The case I ordered was a Pelican 1500.

You can get cases with pick'n pluck foam, without foam, even custom made foam inserts made from different densities and types of foam. You can order Pelican stuff from most of the big photography/videography supply houses. Have a pencil and paper ready when you check out their website, because they have a mind numbing number of shapes and sizes. http://www.pelican.com/
