finished the indexer today and cut the keyway in the telescope clutch place.
used a 5mm end mill/drill to cut a curved face each side of the pin to fit between the gear teeth.
Not an exact fit I know but close enough and it works.

I used the pimple left from parting off as an alignment aid. I filed it off once done.
Here is the whole unit in place. It holds the position with only 0.003mm at the end of the chuck jaw so the rotation at the centre of the job is not noticeable.

The c/sunk screws holding it to the headstock will be changed out once I go shopping again, like wise the cap screws holding the index pin to the bracket.
I added the knurled part as an aid in lifting the pin but didnt think about screwing it onto said pin so it falls back down once the pin is in the gear.
Now the chuck can be locked I started to run the broach. The bit is ground from a broken centre drill.
I used the tail stock to drive the broack.

finished keyway.

Now I know where to cut the key way in the shaft. The key cannot sit above the surface else it will hit the plastic friction plate.

I hate this weather though, everything I touch is rusting from the sweat drops.

Had to machine some Phenolic today. It was irregularly shaped except for one flat side. So the vise was not gonna work without a hassle and the mag chuck wasn’t an option either. And I hate to drop everything and do a side note. But, this vacuum chuck just took me about 15 minutes to make. And the results were better than expected. It held the part solid and I could repeat the clamping/holding with precision. I guess I’ll make a few more sizes and shapes for the future. Please be aware that if you try this at home/in your shop and you lose vacuum, you could have a really bad day…Dave

Very Nice!
Roughly, what's the size of that new vacuum vise?
How much vacuum are we talking about?
Thanks,

Will the wife's vacuum cleaner give enough vacuum? Or should I use my shopvac?

On a vacuum chuck that small, I would use a vacuum pump. A shop vac would be the next best choice. You really need to pull about 25 inHg + to get a good grip, and even a shop vac won't come close to that.

It’s about 2” and I used a vacuum pump. The pump I used is the rotary vane type. Not sure how low in pressure it can go. Did not measure it, but probably in the low microns. I did put my finger over the inlet and it started to hurt and made a red spot on my skin :concerned:.

Today I made a spider handle for my vertical mill. It took most of the day as there
was boring, cutting, threading, ball making, and tapping and polishing. The hub
was made of steel and the handles and balls were fabricated of aluminum. Also
I got to use the rotary table and 4 jaw chuck to drill and tap the holes in the hub.
I used 5/8 NC threads on the hub and 7/16 NC on the balls. It seems to be stout
enough for my use. The single handle on the vise is what was on the mill previously. IMG_0748.JPG
