Same here. First one snapped the tip off that way. The other one has been fine it just keeps cracking. This one I made .010 larger on the tip and it pinches in the line so you have to work it out with pliers but so far it's worked perfect. I've flared about 10 ends with it.

I feel sorry for you. I hate flaring lines. I miss the older softer line. Altho I got some line of eBay for my last job that flares like butter. Glad I ordered extra. My tool is very sought also. It was a cheap Ampro that has been the best I've owned. I've had it for a long time.

I also broke the tip in those forming pieces. When I finally figured it out I ended up making the tip a little shorter in the new parts and slightly conical, maybe 3 degrees. It only needs to keep the very end of the line open while rolling back the second flare face.

The one I made flares easier then my old one and my old one always flared favoring one side the one is always dead on. I may make another

Mark , I was looking at your rail anvil , I have a vague re collection from my apprenticeship days of 50 yrs ago that even small anvils should sit on the grain end of a block of apple or ash wood or some old conveyor belting .
Done so that the resonance of the strike comes back into what your striking .. it helps stop bruising of the metal , same applied to the bigger anvils .
I've only ever seen one mounted on a metal base & that was a home made base which didn't last five minutes till some of the welds came apart ..

Kludged this up yesterday to remove some of the webworm nests in our persimmon tree. It's the nicest looking tree we have, and I don't want it to get stripped bare like it did last year.
Long piece of conduit, bamboo pole, two rakes, and plenty of duct tape.

I am looking for a nice log to mount it on. But I am not sure where you see it on a metal stand. Right now it is mounted on a wooden stand, the one it is sitting on in one of the pics. and it has a piece of rubber under it. although I did not do that for the reason you stated. I did it hoping to remove some of the ring. I do see your point of resonance. I also was not familiar with the ash or apple. I still do not know what pic it is sitting on metal in. I know there is one sitting on a milk crate and one on the wooden stand. I will have to surf back a bit and see.

Dave your thinking is correct. Placing something soft under it takes some of the blow away from the work but the anvil is so heavy it wouldn't be much. The benefit is that it reduces the resonating. That ring kills your hearing, feeds back into your hands, & causes unneeded stress on anything it passes into.

Thought I had my old walking sprinkler finished but when tested it out found that I had a crack in both spray arms. Will now have to figure out how I want to patch them. Called the company that made it, and they said oh yea, the new parts they make will fit the old ones, you just have to grind one screw down in the old body. Yea right. got all the parts and they looked good, Found that the front fork was diff and about 1 inch to narrow for the front wheel. the T head was different, etc. Sent them an email and they called me back, Come to find out this was one of the very first ones they produced once they purchased the pat from the original owners family. They had not used some of those parts since. One is the spray arms from what I can find.
Attached are some pics of it. Now just to figure out the best way to fix the crack in the spray arms. Yea, I have to figure out how to take pictures where they are the right direction,
