2013 POTD Thread Archive

Today I cut and weld the U and Ts of the aircraft engine assembly frame, just tacked them so I can make mods if needed. This design is neat, it will allow the mechanic work with it vertically, tilted and horizontally, also will be adjustable to neutralize the center of gravity of different size engines. And be rotated over the crankshaft axe for ease of assembly. Im planning on adding some gas struts to help with weights. Just not yet in my mind. Suggestions and Ideas very welcomed.

I built a rack for holding small bar stock, all-thread, dowels, etc. I made it from 8 pieces of 5' PVC conduit. It is tucked away behind a row of storage bins. This is a great place to store all that long skinny stuff you can never find a place for.

Wow that's a great idea! I have a few places I can do that- and the PVC/Plywood stack idea can really make it work...

last night;

made progress on my rifle rest, with the column.
it was almost done...and was using a cutoff blade....guess what happpend.
let's just say I got the opportunity to re-turn the OD the again.
I think it may be too tall. I have to take it to the Mill today for some tapped holes, so I might rework and tale some length off.
If so, it will be reowrking the stepped area at top. A thrust bearing and flat races go there. The "mariner" wheel (stiil to be made) will have a boss that fiits in the recess as well.

Well, today while I was doing body work on the wifes van (bondo takes time to dry lol) I got my mark #2 QCTP holder roughed out. Decided to go with mark #2 as some posted the overhang may be a bit much .... plus I had a mind laps and let the tool hit the chuck which busted my "tack welded" tab off LMAO. This one replaces the old block and doesnt overhang as much, plus made it a bit beefier lol. I milled a chunk square, drilled a mounting bolt hole and then used the lathe to make the "Locating disk" on the bottom. Once done, made a 1/2" plunger hole in the face and drilled and tapped a handle hole in the front (don't want both handles stuck together). Test fit and all is well

Once that was done, cut the dove tail in the face and made a tool holder to match it (just the dove tail so far). After some facing cleanup with an endmill (I love my 1" endmill) they fit really nice

Also cut the 3/4" x 3/4" tool slot in the block (did this with a 1/2" drill to make a hole and band saw to cut out a chunk). I will later mill it to the right size and square, as the mills don't really like to cut slots that deep and it takes forever lol. This way, I have a 1/2" by almost 3/4" slot that only needs to be dressed up

Made up a welding clamp thingy.
Roller cabinet is 30 years old, holds all my welding junk.

Lincoln sp85 110 mig, .020 wire.
Easy to blow through thin sheet metal on old box.
Least I will get clamps out of it. Tired of pulling
out the drawer for my clamps, all pilled up, what a mess.

Round rod is from a busted up chair.

Well really didnt do a project but i dont think my pics warents a new thread, so Ill put them hear. Had a brass ball valve that was too light to scrap today so Ive never turned brass, so i tried. Man it turns nice. I see some brass or bronze bushings in the future in some steering parts on one of my small tractors.

My garage floor is not in very good condition so some feet for the new G4003G lathe are needed.

Made up 4 of these yesterday and painted them this morning.

Around 9:00 tonight they seemed dry enough to handle. Could not resist installing one of them. The Lathe is still very high in the pictures. I will drop it down once I get all the feet installed.

Does not look like it in this picture, but there is still 2" of shoring under the lathe. I thought all my welds turned out great, if I do say so myself:))
