2013 POTD Thread Archive

Well, my project of the day started as just getting in the garage and away from the MIL, then as I pondered what the hell I could actually do, I caught sight of something that bugs me every now and then ... the missing (broken) handle on the lathe (for the feed screw on/off).

So, grabbed some bar and went about making a new handle

Well, day is still young, so decided to make a QCTP holder .... which is kind of strange since I dont have anything to make the actual holder post out of yet (and not sure how to do it). Anyway, figured I would make the holder first, which will be dovetailed, as it gives me something to play with in the mill lol. Got a chunk and make it square on all sides

Got all the side parallel, and the mill is working great, Im pleased with the new handle

After milling out two edges (where the dovetail section will stick out) I had to move on to the channel that will hold the tools (as though I have a dovetail cutter, its 3/8" shaft and wont fit the 1/2" end mill holder :( Cant wait until I can afford the R8 ER-40 collet set

Day was cut short when a job was approved and the guy called me to come pick up the deposit :)

Today I unloaded the tool and cutter grinder I picked up yesterday. Freed the corridor from the front of the basement to my shop at the back from my clutter. That took me one and a half hour... Put the grinder on wheels and rolled it to its current location. Sounds simple but since I had no help, it took me the afternoon. After that I admired it for a short time and played a bit around with it. It's a real cute machine. I love it!

Today I decided to make up handles for some carbide burrs so they can be used to deburr holes. I saw this idea in Home Shop Machinist magazine and figured it was worth a try. I used some brass bar that I had laying around - it's always nice to work with brass (or at least I think so). This job also gave me the opportunity to try knurling.

I finally got my Rockwell mill back together. I still have to finish the electrical wiring and a few other minor things, but should be ready to flip the switch in a couple of days.

All of the badges are junk except the round one on the base. I have something in mind to try to make new ones which will make it look a lot better. Overall it l think it turned out pretty decent.

Wow! That mill looks great! excellent work. She's a beaut.

I did a repair job for a buddy, a broken motor mount on a 4 wheeler cylinder head. Had it welded and then cleaned up the mounting surface to make sure it was parallel to the other side.

Finished my pulley this morning. Bored the ID to .875. Tapered the ends to give it that "store bought look". Cut the keyway with a makeshift broach...that was a disaster. Cleaned up the keyway with file. Fits nice and tight.
