Y-axis alignment on the mill

You might also be able to clamp a known good machinist's square in the vise jaws, and indicate off the longer leg.

Which would indicate exactly the same thing as indicating the fixed jaw!
 
Maybe I just didn't say it clearly???

Indicating the fixed jaw is done by moving the table along the X axis. Indicating the "other leg" of the square would be done by moving Y.
 
hman, that sounds like a very good method!
If your vise is square in X, there is no need to check Y, it will be on, unless your vise or machine is out, and then you have bigger problems.
 
at this point, both the X and Y axis are in good shape (about 1/2 thou for each).
