Funny that this should come up now. I was planning to make a pair of short keys today for just this purpose.

I found that it is real good to try to get the part in the chuck reasonably centered. Then, getting it to run true is easier. I start getting confused if I see my indicator swing more than a full rotation when trying to adjust the opposing jaws.

My chucks keys are 3/8" square. I made twin keys for my 4 jaw by welding together some 3/8" square stock from Home Depot.
