What type of tap is this?

they're really handy - what sizes did you get? Couple of things to be aware of - the drill size for a formed hole is different for a cut hole of the same size+pitch and they don't much like being inserted off axis. Drill/countersink/tap in one location on the drill press/ mill is the best option in my limited experience.
 
Do they have restrictions as to hardness?
Could you form stainless steel? annealed tool steels?
Never seen them either.

No, roll taps are normally used in soft materials like aluminum, brass and plastic. They are much tougher than standard taps, cut more precise threads and produce no chips.

Hey Matt, sorry I did not respond. Life got in the way.

I have 3/4" ones referenced in my first post. Also, some 3/8-24, 3/8-16 and 5/16-18 but not sure if the 5/16 are form or cutting taps.
