Thank You for that info', one mystery (to me) solved. Can they be used as lathe dogs?

Probably not. They were originally designed for use on cylindrical grinders, but I see no reason why it wouldn't work for turning work between centers on your lathe. The only thing you want to be careful of is, don't reverse direction of your spindle, the dog will come loose!

BTW, those set screws look as if someone added them to the grinding dog. I don't believe they were original to the dog.
