What Did You Buy Today?

Oh WOW ! My Starrett toolmakers hammer sold on the bay an hour after listed ! :big grin: Im on a roll . :encourage:
One of those cute alloy hammers with a built-in magnifier? I didn’t see it earlier this week.

I “rebuilt” one a couple of years ago and also have a cheap “Winchester” knockoff:

Damn, I got a deal on mine, around $30 including the new lens & O-ring:

Can’t believe it’s “Out of Stock!”

After more research, Starrett sells for $128; the “P” apparently means personalized, so only $100 to have one engraved for a gift.

Some of us don't like " knock offs " . As a USA machinist / toolmaker , I don't purchase them . You are well aware , if it keeps up , the jobs will be gone soon . I'm glad I got out when I did . When someone calls for me to work , I triple the price I was making , and if they don't like it , F 'em . Send it overseas .

I don't understand those hammers. I have a tiny ball pein, and a little larger. and a magnifier and loop.
The all in one seems like a disaster, use it and ruin the magnifier by scratching it up. Just don't get it.
Impulse purchase from new apprentices . " You'll need this " .

I got my Starrett as a curiosity a few years ago at Cabin Fever and was a free add-in since it was missing the lens and the back was scarred where someone removed a name. The Winchester was a well-intentioned gift from my Grandson (better than another Best Grandfather sign).

The magnifier & flat hammer face makes sense for using with a prick punch to mark scribed center lines before using a brass hammer and center punch. I never saw the reason for the ball peen other than to balance the head.

that's already been discussed here once before. I have used the ball end quite often. It's good for shaping, shrinking.. it has it's uses. I don't understand why so many here feel as you do.

Oh I use the ball on regular ball peen hammers (1, 2, 4, 8 & 12oz) plus a beautiful set of 9oz NIROC Carbide-faced ball & cross peen hammers from OZ, just don’t understand why there’s one on the Toolmaker hammer.
