I went to a local monument company (grave markers), told them what I wanted and why. I got two polished slabs, 3” thick 18” x 22” of black granite (fall-off scraps) for $8.00 each. I use one for sanding and the other for a bench “anvil”

Best response. The most viable supply route for use less than actual measurement. A surface plate does not deserve being a sanding block. There are at least 5 ways to test flatness, mostly assured by modern production.
Plate glass, marble and porcelain tile backed by MDF also good, lots of sizes in every home improvement store. Smaller/ lighter pieces need rubber feet or a edged tray to keep them steady.
