I use old toothbrushes for lots of lubrication and preserving work. A thin coat of ATF applied with a toothbrush gets into all the pores and corners and keeps rust away pretty well. I like to keep all the nice metal bits in my shop either painted or oiled. It really is not difficult. The raw stock is the only metal allowed to be bare and dry.
