Quality of Grizzly vs Shars Chucks

Thank you. that will be helpful. They are cheaper from CME. $206 - shows 10% discount at checkout. And shipping was less than half of the Shars chuck. I assume the same weight, although could not find that either. I think this chuck weighs 56 bs. I plan to to bore the backing plate boss, or try, with the new boring head. I also bought 2 edge finders to use to center the boring head. Having a time getting it to center. I thought it was just left side to right side divided by 2. Maybe the edge finder diameter plays in to it.

Yeah, I have found that sometimes the CME site has a better price, and other times the eBay listing has a better price, so it's smart to check both.

Not to spend more of your money, but one of the things I'm most thrilled with having bought was a co-axial center finder....it made drilling backing plates a breeze and so much faster I can't imagine going without one. I went with an inexpensive Shar's unit and it has been absolutely perfect:

Maybe I'm missing something, but why did you purchase a plain backplate rather than one with an integral L00 mount? It just seems like more work and more chance for error when machining and assembling 3 parts as opposed to 2. When i was searching eBay for 10" back plates it appeared that one complete with the L00 mount was only about $20.00 more than a plain plate and mounting adaptor.

The original L00 mount doesn't look as though it came with the chuck it's currently on. The appears to be somewhat beat up and has a few holes that don't appear to line up with any mounting bolts.

I have purchased several back plates over the years from CME. The latest was a 10" L00 for a Skinner 4 jaw chuck. It only took a few minutes to measure and turn the plate to fit the chuck. I used a transfer punch to mark the location of the mounting holes. The drilled and tapped the holes on the mill. I don't think the whole operation took an hour.

As an FYI the 10" Skinner 4 jaw I purchased weighs 85. lbs. The complete backplate weighs just under 20 lbs. (19.73 lbs.). At just shy of 105 lbs. It's a beast to lift onto the spindle.

It is not a LOO. It is a 2 1/8 x 8 threaded. Yes it is beat up. so is the lathe. It was made in 1942. There is not a 2 1/8 x 8 chuck or backplate available on the planet earth. Have looked for 18 months. The lathe mount has 6 holes. so does the chuck. Not seeing extra holes.
Nobody ever reds the whole thread. Every post is a start-over.

Can you machine/modify this back plate? 8" x 1.5"x8TPI back plate. https://www.ebay.com/itm/3509828123...D78JOPzlFkSIIt4XO3hfUC2n2P|tkp:Bk9SR_KogaSjZA

It's basically nearly all done save for opening up the threads and making the register. Looks like there is enough meat to do it.

Or you can buy a chunk of cast iron and make a back plate from scratch. I'm sure there's cheaper sources, but you can get 8" diameter x 1.75" thick piece for $76 from McMaster. https://www.mcmaster.com/8926K36/ I made a 6" back plate for my set tru ER40 chuck from raw cast iron. Was a lot easier to do than I expected. Came out very well.

That is what I am doing with the 10 inch plate in the picture. It is a 1 1/2 x 8 thread and 10 inch as I am fitting a 10 inch chuck. I purchased that plate because both the cost and shipping from Lost Creek was cheaper then either Shars or CME. Not sure why shipping for something the same size and weight is triple from one vender to another.

My mistake. I did read the text about a threaded chuck. However I kept seeing pictures of L00 adaptors. I didn’t know if you made a mistake identifying it, or others entering the conversation had jumped to conclusions.

It’s difficult to tell the style of adaptor from your picture.

Yes somebody else posted a LOO picture back in the thread. If I could buy something ready made for this lathe I would have. Local machine shops not interested either,

As mentioned in an earlier post I’ve adapted several backplates to fit my lathes. The Seneca Falls Star machine has 1 7/16-12 thread.

Finding a backplate with that thread was more trouble than it was worth. I either found plates I could retread or bore for a insert.

Pick up the phone and call CME. If you’re lucky enough to get the employee (can’t recall his name offhand) he is super helpful. He steered me away from the CME backplate when I bought a 6” adjustable structure 3 jaw chuck because it was too thin.
