I need an 8 inch or 10 inch chuck and plain backing plate for my 1942 lathe. I can get them at about the same price from Shars or Grizzly. Yes a Buck would be nice but not in the budget right now. The Grizzly products have free freight, saving about $160. If I get the Grizzly 10 inch chuck I will need to get the Shars back plate as Grizzly only has an 8 inch back plate. Will I lose much on quality with the Grizzly chuck?

why not look on ebay for a beautiful older US made quality chuck? usually lots of them listed. this is one of mine for my previous lathe.

I would love to get a good used USA chuck, but I have 3 right now bought off internet sources. None fit or were as advertised.

that's odd. the fitment I mean. a spindle type should be a spindle type. unless you don't know what spindle type you have. as to not as advertised, I buy a LOT of stuff on ebay and one rule I have is never buy from a vendor with less than a 99% rating and a lot of ratings. also, ebay makes it easy to return an item you're not happy with, at the seller's expense if it is not as described.

I own a share 4 jaw. I expect you have a threaded spindle nose . if so I order a backing your size and mount the chuck to it . just get a blank plate with your thread size.
I can't speak for Grizzly quality because I do not own any of their products but my brother had trouble with a simple pan brake from them so I am not a Grizzly fan.

I bought a chinese 5C collet chuck a few years ago and it had too much run out for me. my collet set is Hardinge so not the problem. bought a barely used Bison from ebay and the difference was amazing, same collets. no more chinese chucks for me. I try to be selective buying chinese stuff. for my new/old machine, I bought a beautiful Dorian tool post from ebay and then ordered Phase II tool holders from MSC. they seem quite nice.

Between the two I'd go with the Shars chuck. Grizzly is a minefield of uneven quality. They have some good stuff, and some complete garbage. It's often, but not always, true that the bigger ticket items from Grizzly are higher quality, but there are exceptions. Shars seems fairly consistent. Pretty decent stuff and a few real gems. I haven't gotten anything from them that was just junk.

No the spindle is 2 1/8 x 8. None commercially available. Will probably mount a blank plate to my spindle collar, then mount the blank plate to the new chuck.

that is an unusual spindle thread. what lathe is it?

I see 2-1/4" x 8 tpi and 2-1/8"x 9 tpi stuff but nothing in 2-1/8 x 8 tpi. you may have to make a back plate from scratch.
