My new ( but it’s old) Parker Majestic

Wow, looks great!
Are those tubes? Does it have an electromagnetic chuck?

Yes. It’s got a Taft Peirce electromagnetic chuck. I’m not sure it’s going to work. The wires were cut on the chuck and I have no idea if that tubed dc rectifier still works. I’m going to get out my volt ohm meter and check the chuck first. That’s going to be a project in and of itself. I’d like to get it working.

Here’s a few more pictures I just took. I found the serial number too. Looks like it was manufactured in 1948. I’m guessing this was a government surplus item.
I just checked the chuck and at least there’s continuity between the two power wires. And there’s no continuity between either wire and the housing.

Well… the real good news is my VFD came in today. I wired it up and ran it for about 2 minutes just until the spindle started to warm up. Slowed it down to about 40 hertz. Let it run another minute and shut it down. It sounded okay. I figured that since it’s been in storage for a while that it would be best to get the bearing grease warmed up and then shut it down. About a half hour later I ran at speed for about 10 minutes.

It sounds okay and with a stethoscope I didn’t hear anything troubling. So…now I’m going to post on the electrical forum and see about getting the mag chuck working.

That's very good news Tim!

FWIW... Before I finally bit the bullet and purchased a used surface grinder.... I wasted money and time trying to build a grinder. My plan was to mount a grinder on my shaper and let the shaper movements kind of be an automatic surface grinder. Needless to say, the results were never satisfactory. I purchased angular bearings...Built a spindle....purchased a small permanent magnetic chuck...and di succeed to kind of grind some parallels.
But...IN MY OPINION it was a failure. The only reason I mention this is I do have a small magnetic chuck. So I stuck that on my grinder and set the electromagnetic chuck on the side for now.

Here’s a picture of of my little chuck and the dust collection I’m working on. I had a big funnel which is for 55 gallon drums. So I rigged up a connection to mate the funnel to the 1-7/8 hose of my Ridgid shop vacuum. It works fairly well but I figured I’d add a plastic side panel to it since it looked like the spark pattern was not fully hitting the funnel in its center.
In any case, just the first test even without the side panel was 100% better than when I ran it dry and without the vacuum.

I’m still working on a couple of more brackets for the side panel but it’s about 80% complete so far.

By the way… yes, this is a quick hack job that I’m throwing together with the stuff I have on hand. I am by no way trying to imply this dust collection set up is on par with some of the far better builds I’ve seen some of you put together with a sheet metal break. I don’t have a metal break. And sheet metal is not my forte. I think that the Campbell Soup can and plastic vehicle panel might give that away. But I needed something ( NOW ) because the test grind I did put dust up everywhere in my shop. I have a layer of abrasive dust all over my lathe and mill.

Anyway, it looks like it’s going to do the trick. That said, I’m a utilitarian type of guy. I just want it to work.

So I finished attaching that piece of “ I don’t know what it is” plastic to the funnel on the surface grinder. Between a heat gun and some pop-rivets…the plastic acts as an extension to the grinder dust collection system. It ain’t pretty, but it works pretty damned good. A lot of the dust is now going in the shop vac….not in the shop.
In addition, I moved my arbor press so that I could move my shaper…. So I could place the SG where the shaper was. And… the shaper is positioned so that any dust escaping the collection system …. goes out the door.

The bad news is now I need to find out where to put all of the stuff which was on the floor. It’s sitting in the carport, outside the shop.

My tiny shop is actually a lot more manageable. But I still need to find a place for my anvil. I actually use it quite often.
