So, I finally found a surface grinder that was a somewhat local find. It was about 100 miles away and 800.00
Picked it up Friday and spent two days unloading from my little Nissan Hardbody. Thank God I added a leaf spring helper kit on the truck because I’m guessing it’s between 1400-1600 pounds.

Now, I haven’t had a chance to run it yet because even though the spindle feels good and the guy who sold it said he ran it and the spindle wasn’t whining… I’m at a loss as how to add oil to the spindle. Plus, I’m waiting for the VFD

You can see the hole which I’m guessing is the oil hole doesn’t have an access hole on the spindle. So I’m wondering if the spindle was maybe rebuilt at one time and permanent bearings installed. Do they even do that. The grinder looks to be in decent shape.

I also tried to loosen the spindle and turn it to see if an oil hole lines up. I can’t budge this spindle even after removing the three set screw in the housing.

Great score. I love my P-M.
Contact Parker Majestic. They were great to deal with.

Dave, is there some trick that I’m missing as to how to remove the spindle or spindle / motor assembly. I can’t budge this thing. I’ve searched and searched and can’t find anything online

Gosh, I don't know as I haven't removed the spindle.

No problem. I get the fact that everyone says spindles need to be sent out to be repaired. But one still has to remove the spindle and yet I can’t find anything online on the process to remove it. I’m hoping that it’s been rebuilt with permanent bearings since that’s the only explanation I can assume since it was installed without the oil hole NOT lined up with the hole of the wheel head housing.

Anyway I’m not going to go nuts with this. I think I’m going to power it up and see what happens. And then pull the table off and clean it. It actually looks super clean on the wheel head and upright scraped surfaces. Like it was done yesterday. But that part rarely would show much wear in my opinion. It’s not like the spindle is constantly getting raised and lowered on a surface grinder. The wear would be at the table and carriage surfaces. Once I pull and inspect those I’ll probably have a better handle of what I’m working on.

And the, there’s the electric Taft Pearce chuck. And it’s DC rectified controller with two TUBES IN IT. !

They are very solid machines.
Mine came out of a production whop and the ways are in excellent condition. The only thing I replaced were the drive tapes for the table.

It looks good. The guy I purchased it from said he got from someone who had it in storage since the 80’s. Table moves very freely. Look at the underside of the table. It doesn’t look worn. After just noticing the scrap marks here, I’m not even sure I’ll pull the table. I don’t have the tapes. I have a rack and pinion. I think it’s a 6 x 12 Anyway, I’m not going to force anything dealing with the spindle. I’m going to power it up and see how it goes.
