Maglight Problems

I'm old and grumpy today.

I remember the bad old days of carbon zinc batteries that leaked if you looked at them wrong. :( Then came alkaline which never leaked! :D The factories moved across the big pond and they turned into leaky monsters again. Personally I have the most problems with Duracell.

Before I put a new maglite into service, I coat the insides and the ends of the batteries with either Vaseline, or silicone grease / electrolytic grease

If they do minor leak, it keeps the leak from the aluminum and helps lube it.

Put a mark on the calendar / cellphone calendar whatever
Change the batteries once a year

Put a piece of tape on the outside of the light with the battery date.

Alkaline batteries swell and eventually leak if they are allowed to run all the way down and stay in a device for too long. Last week I discover that I had left one in a wireless mouse for years. In that instance I was able to get it out of the mouse. The battery was ten years old. My wife, the queen of customer service calls, called their toll-free line and told them about it. They sent a check for $17 to cover the cost of a replacement mouse and a coupon for $10 off new Duracell batteries.

I have discovered that Nebo makes some great LED flashlights. They are amazingly bright.

https://www.nebotools.com/prod_details.php?id=365&cid=16 a bright flood light the size of a magic marker It does use AAA batteries which usually am out of.

https://www.nebotools.com/prod_details.php?id=277&cid=&subid=&subsubcid= This one only uses 1 AA battery and has a very high quality even light that is just right for working on equipment and around the house.

If you have one of those fancy flashlights that uses a CR123 batteries the Streamlight brand batteries can be found cheaper at police supply shops and sporting goods discounters
