[Newbie] King lathe spindle question

Careful you don't get a drill bit stuck in there.

John, would a long version of carbide tipped cement drill (that is sharpened properly) be less prone to jamming than a regular twist drill for this job?

Might be. I'd also want to mount the bit to the carriage and feed with the leadscrew. That's exactly the sort of hole that likes to grab bits and suck them in.
 
OK -- so this follow up is weeks late -- but the issue was non-concentric bore. I managed to drill the excess material out without much trouble -- just went slow and got it done. Mounted the drill bit on an extension arm set in chuck and fed really slow. Did not use cement drill -- tho an interesting idea.
