In Search - Rack Pinion Gear SB 10L

I would thing that something like 4140 steel would work well for that part. Heat treatable to add some wear resistance. To me the hard part would be cutting the gear teeth. Something I have no experience with or tools to do the job. I have seen videos on how to make your own custom gear cutters for use in the mill, if you have an indexing/dividing head.
 
I do have an indexing/dividing head - the issue is - I don't have the specifications for the gear - I know SB used 14-1/2 deg PA - but that's an assumption that this such. I could use the current gear as a pattern, but that would take the lathe out of operation. In the end - making it may be the only option. It seems that quality parts for the older machines are getting harder and harder to find.
