Hydarulic Dial Indicator Stand

My guess is that the single knob operates a piston which presses fluid against pistons in each end which allows you to do total adjustment with one knob instead of having a knob at the end of each segment that must be adjusted for re-positioning. Certainly is more convenient.

You're probably right. There must be an advantage, although after reading all of the issues I'm thinking a mechanical articulated arm is more robust unless I spring for the high-end (expensive) version.
 
I have been happy with mine a couple drops of oil once or twice a year for the last 10 years.is all it needs. for 40 dollars

I do have a noga in between those 2. but a NOGA the size of the large one was, is way out of my price range.
 
You could build your own. It has been done :)
