Gorton 8D collet type? Is this the proprietary one?

A full set of these would consists of sizes from 1/16 all the way up to 1/2 in 1/16 increments. Also included a 0.100" size, for single lip Gorton cutters used on the paragraphs they used to sell. And yes, these collets were used on them too! As far as I remember, they did not make the collets in 1/32 or 1/64th unless you ordered them as specials. Need to go look at all of the catalogs on the George Gorton Machine website. A lot of history on that website! And also the Yahoo Gorton Milling machine group too. Ken

MDC are you sure your 8D mill has a no. 9 B & S adapter in the spindle? My book I used to have said the 8D mill did not have this adapter. It was an integral spindle with this Gorton taper. Only the 8-1/2D had the 9 B & S adapter and the 9J had a 10 B & S taper. ( I had one of these to my 9J mill)
B.T.Y. Harding will make these collets upon request. Very pricy$$$.

You are correct 4gsr, my mill is an 81/2 D. When I saw this post I just had to go to the shop and get the manual to check. Sorry my mistake. It does have the #9 Brown & Sharpe taper. I have upgraded to the er40 collet system since the original post.
