it look's like i will need a machinist!:)

'Oh boy, got the Harbor Freight harmonic balancer puller!'

'Oh no! one of the two threaded holes in the balancer is stripped!'

once again!

'You don't want to be me!':)

Have A Nice Day!

Welcome to the wonderful world. Maybe try a mm bolt and jam it in there with lock tight and a jam nut.
Like the last chance garage. Once it gets past the it just moved part, ya got it made. Usually Y blocks
even up to 332s & 368 Ys come right off. You think thats bad try exhaust manifolds on FEs & FT engines!
Flat heads rule!!!! dont give up, there are other pullers, I got a big one that grips behind the damper,
used back in the day when there were no threaded holes. Looks like a bearing separator, two big
threaded bolts with a one inch bolt for the muscle. I did a front cover seal on this truck also a 292
couple years ago so I know about y blocks and this truck gets plenty of oil to its rocker arms (rare)

thanks gk

well, got it off.

the first step was finding out

the threads in the dampener were 3/8" 16 tpi.

more to follow.

have a nice day

on to removing oil pump!:)

this has an external oil pump like mopar big blocks.

first there's an external line from side of

oil pan to the oil pump.

Question: the 4 bolts i can see on oil pump, i'm a little suspicious

those are just the cover bolts.

where are the pump to block bolts?

have a nice day!

seven

appreciate the info.

i'll be out there scraping!:)

it's just So Cal type grunge around that area.

looks like engine was steam cleaned before pulling it out.

except around oil pump might have been hard to get to.

will update maybe after pump is off.

goal is to get it all apart and see what's what.

have a nice day!

racing hobby machinist's

oil pump is off.

next up is timing cover.

tested one oil pan bolt going into bottom of cover , as usual

it broke loose with a little tug on open end wrench.

timing cover i believe has to slide straight forward.

because of locator pins in block.

knock on wood it breaks loose from oil pan gasket

without a lot of monkey motion.:)

have a nice day!

racing hobby machinist's

the timing cover is off!:)

there are no locator pins on this block and

timing cover.

there's a little place you can pry timing cover off

behind the fuel pump mounting boss.

it just tipped over and came off.

on to the timing chain and sprockets!:)

have a nice day!

Since there are no dowels to align the timing cover, I believe you will need a centralizing tool to make sure the front seal is true with the crankshaft when you reassemble.

tony

i ran across post saying to oil the dampener and

use that to center timing cover AT REASSEMBLY TIME.

i'm on the other side of the mountain, still taking it apart

to find out about that 'spun bearing' the guy who

sold it to me said it had.

have a nice day!

Probably would work, but if it's a press fit, I wouldn't want to bother with that. I believe the real tool is designed with a little clearance so that it just slips over the crank snout and back out easily after you get the cover on.
