End mill selection

Thanks for all the advice, lots of information. The gentleman who I got my lathe from gave me a box full of end mills of various sizes and configurations. Since I recently bought a milling machine, I have been just "winging" it with what I have.

You'll find out soon what you need and what you use a lot, and what you don't need. I was going to suggest mining Ebay for quantity of one size. I bought a lot (maybe 50 .140 double end 2 flute HHS endmills) for about $.50 apiece a couple of years ago, I've used some, I'll never run out of them. I even made an adapter and used one as a boring tool.
 
Look up my post on roughing endmill there's a link in there to one's I've ordered I think they were like 20 bucks shipped for a 4 flute 1/2 inch rougher I'm really happy with it so far they say they are usa made another thing to consider is resharpened endmills found some good deals on usa made ones if exact size isn't something you require
